Importance of a Gas Safety Check

Lots of people forget to look after the basics that keep them safe at home or whilst they are at work. By getting your gas appliances checked every 12 months it will help to reduce the risk of a gas incident. Gas appliances that are fitted poorly or are not serviced right, can lead to gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

How Long Does a Gas Safety Check Take?

A gas safety check takes around an hour and is very important as it will detect any levels of carbon monoxide in your home or business. Problems such as congested ventilation pipes will mean that carbon monoxide will build up, if this is released inside a home or business it becomes a serious health risk which can be fatal if it is left undetected.

What is a Gas Safety Check?

A gas safety check involves an engineer assessing the safety of your appliances and checking that the system works as it should. They will check...

· Ventilation passages are not blocked and are working as they should be

· The safety devices are operating like they need to be

· The electrical device is burning at the appropriate pressure

· Harmful gases are not transferring outside of the home or business

A gas check should be done about every 12 months. Last year alone 18 people died, and 399 people were injured all due to gas-related incidents.

Why Should I Look After my Gas Appliances?

It is crucial that you get your gas appliances safety checked every 12 months. You wouldn’t leave your car without a service or MOT so why leave your boiler unchecked. A regular gas check will ensure that all your gas appliances are all in working order.

When it comes to getting appliances to check it can be easier to think just about your boiler and forget any other gas appliances. However, most fires are related to other gas appliances.

Chimneys & Air Vents

Chimneys and air vents play an important role in the safe operation of gas appliances, allowing products of combustion to escape and ensure a high level of ventilation. Even though it can be very cold during winter never block the chimney airway, this could result in a build-up of carbon monoxide. Chimneys get blocked every year due to birds’ nests and fragments which will stop hazardous fumes from fleeing, this is something the engineer will have to look out for and check.

If you live in a shared property and the chimney or air vent is shared this is will be a shared responsibility to ensure that it is checked every 12 months as it is possible for carbon monoxide to enter properties through these vents.
